Abstract:
Cretaceous rocks exposed in northern Kaipara Harbour, Northland, consist of well-bedded mid and outer fan flysch (Late Cretaceous: Arowhanan-Piripauan) separated by thinly bedded limestones and claystones from Late Cretaceous (early Haumurian) fan and slope deposits, which are in turn succeeded by massive Late Cretaceous - Early Paleocene (late Haumurian-Teurian) claystones. Fossil faunas indicate deposition below the upper slope and shelf, from which fossiliferous concretions were derived and mixed by contemporaneous reworking. The sediments were derived from a meta-igneous and granitic source, with very minor contributions from submarine volcanism. Greywacke-type detritus is almost absent.
