Abstract:
Trolling operations of the 65 ft steel stern trawler 'Jay Elaine' during the month of Feb 1972 are described and discussed. In 5 trips based on Onehunga, during which considerable time was spent searching, 28,318 pounds of albacore were taken in 172 hr of fishing. The best catches were taken off Waikato; the area off Kaipara also appeared to be promising. The catch rate of 112 albacore per hundred hookhours compares favourably with the 1968 east coast average of 80 fish per hundred hook-hours and the 1950-68 average reported for the California fleet of 70 fish per hundred hook-hours. The temp of the albacore body rises up to 10 degrees C above the water temp shortly after the capture and declines after the fish has ceased struggling. The decline in temp is hastened by transferring the fish into a bath of sea water and ice.
