Abstract:
At the moment Bdellodes lapidaria does not successfully control lucerne flea populations in New Zealand. In order to explain this there should be further studies of the mite biology and ecology. Additional predators or parasitoids (such as nematodes) that are potentially able to control lucerne flea could also be screened. Introduction of Neomolgus capillatus from a climatically similar region into New Zealand for experimental purposes to study establishment and recovery is strongly recommended. Until biological control measures have been established, monitored spraying of lucerne flea populations combined with grazing management is recommended for control. It is vital to establish a spray programme containing nonacaricidal insecticides if predatory mite numbers are not to be affected. (auths)
